City Breaks - Edinburgh

Uni doesn’t just present a great opportunity for long hot summers away with a rucksack strapped to your back and a lonely planet clasped in your hands, heading for that “off the beaten track destination”. To be fair most of us never have 9-5.30 lectures Monday to Friday, and this presents a perfect excuse to head away somewhere closer to home for a long weekend, well after all what is that student loan for? I have found (and sampled myself) five great city breaks accessible by a short flight or train ride, and given you some tips about what not to miss for an all round social and cultural weekend away.
  • The Castle – definitely worth a visit to understand Scottish history, and provides stunning views over the whole city
  • The Dungeons – a fright and a half….make sure you take someone to grab onto!
  • Hollyrood Palace – the walk along the Royal Mile from the Castle to the Palace is a must, and a great way to burn off all that haggis. Stop at some of the Tartan and Kilt shops on the way for a true Scottish feel.
  • Arthur's Seat – a walk up this extinct volcano will blow away the cobwebs and prepare you for an evening of…..
  • …Whisky! A dram or 5 of the Scotland’s finest exports next to an open fire in one of Edinburgh’s many watering holes is the great way to finish off a weekend.
