City Breaks - Granada
Uni doesn’t just present a great opportunity for long hot summers away with a rucksack strapped to your back and a lonely planet clasped in your hands, heading for that “off the beaten track destination”. To be fair most of us never have 9-5.30 lectures Monday to Friday, and this presents a perfect excuse to head away somewhere closer to home for a long weekend, well after all what is that student loan for? I have found (and sampled myself) five great city breaks accessible by a short flight or train ride, and given you some tips about what not to miss for an all round social and cultural weekend away.
-
Alhambra – the pink Moorish palace is definitely top of the sights to visit in Granada – it is worth booking in advance as queues get long, but once inside it is a true marvel of Arabic architecture, and the views from it are breathtaking.
-
Base to visit Sierra Nevada and Malaga – Granada is set perfectly between Mountain and Beach and with a mild temp even in December is perfect for skiers and sunbathers alike.
-
Albaicin – The old Moorish quarter across the valley from the Alhambra, a labyrinth of narrow streets and whitewashed houses, is definitely worth a wander around and provides a perfect vantage point for views of the palace.
-
Shopping – From Zara, Mango and Bershka to less well known labels and even the large outdoor market from the 'Puerta Real" to the "Plaza de Mariana Pineda, this is a shopaholics dream!
-
Churros and tapas – Churros, a fried-dough pastry-based snack dipped in pots of hot chocolate is a devilishly good snack anytime of the day, and after all that shopping what could be better than a glass of Sangria or Rioja accompanied by FREE tapas – this is the way to drink!
