City Breaks - Paris
Uni doesn’t just present a great opportunity for long hot summers away with a rucksack strapped to your back and a lonely planet clasped in your hands, heading for that “off the beaten track destination”. To be fair most of us never have 9-5.30 lectures Monday to Friday, and this presents a perfect excuse to head away somewhere closer to home for a long weekend, well after all what is that student loan for? I have found (and sampled myself) five great city breaks accessible by a short flight or train ride, and given you some tips about what not to miss for an all round social and cultural weekend away.
-
Montmartre - Set on a hill 130 meters high, the area of Montmartre looks grandly out over all of Paris, and this artistic quarter of the city should not be missed. See the artists still at work, and picture yourselves in Moulin Rouge.
-
The Seine and Notre Dame – the best way to see the river is on the Bateaux Mouches which depart from both sides of the river all day. The Notre Dame de Paris is widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture and definitely worth a visit.
-
Tuileries Gardens and Musée du Louvre – a walk through these beautiful gardens is a very Parisian pastime, and of course the ‘smaller than you think’ Mona Lisa is worth a look. Don’t though miss some of the other spectacular art on show at the Louvre.
-
Eiffel Tower – one of the most recognisable structures in the whole world – a visit to the stop is not for those who suffer from vertigo, but the views at the top do take your breath away.
-
A glass of vino – a trip to Paris would not be complete without a glass or two of wine, or a coffee (if its before 11am!) watching the world go by from a pavement café.
