City Breaks - Amsterdam

Uni doesn’t just present a great opportunity for long hot summers away with a rucksack strapped to your back and a lonely planet clasped in your hands, heading for that “off the beaten track destination”. To be fair most of us never have 9-5.30 lectures Monday to Friday, and this presents a perfect excuse to head away somewhere closer to home for a long weekend, well after all what is that student loan for? I have found (and sampled myself) five great city breaks accessible by a short flight or train ride, and given you some tips about what not to miss for an all round social and cultural weekend away.

  • Cycling – the bike is king of the road in Amsterdam and hiring one to explore Amsterdam’s miles and miles of canals is beautiful, at times dangerous and bound to be hilarious
  • Anne Franks House – Amsterdam’s most famous daughter put this house on Prinsengracht on the map for all the wrong reasons, but this humbling place should not be missed. If you’re like me, take some Kleenex, its very moving,
  • Van Gogh Museum – most of his work in all its glory from the famous sunflowers to less well know pieces. This is the Rijks Museum will satisfy the art-lovers among you.
  • Crepes – do not leave Amsterdam without eating at least 3 of these delicious treats – savoury or sweet, it’s like the joy of Pancake Day every day!
  • Beer and the Coffee Shops – not that I am condoning this kind of behaviour, but when in Rome……the odd pint, joint, or wander through the Read Light District adds to the Amsterdam experience.
