experiencenotts

Knowing that you probably won't have more than a tenner in your wallet, the team at Experience Nottingham has come up with 10 pound pinching experiences just for you.

All Action

1.  Get wrapped up to brave the cold

Take to the Olympic Rink at the National Ice Centre in Hockley. Admission is only £4.00 with an NUS card - you also benefit from free skate hire. The university shop may also be stocking NIC discount booklets. These vouchers will get you a skating session, skate hire and priority entrance for just £2.50.

2.  Dare to take The Nottingham Ghost Walk?

They’re held every Saturday at 7pm (except in December) and start at the Salutation Inn. The walk takes in the oldest parts of the city near the Castle. There’ll be stories of ghosts, a bit of history, details of gory executions, and visit to a graveyard. You’ll end up back at the Inn in the haunted caves beneath. (£4.00 adults).

Olde Worlde

3.  Check out Nottingham’s underground

Nottingham Castle, a 17th century ducal mansion, is most famous for its position high up on the Castle Rock. But you can also explore the mediaeval caves underneath, including Mortimer’s Hole (£1 concessions). A joint ticket for entry to the Castle’s museum and art gallery, along with The Museum of Nottingham Life at Brewhouse Yard, costs £1.50 (concessions). Or tunnel deep down into the caves underneath Broadmarsh shopping centre. At the ‘City of Caves’ visitor attraction (£3.95 concessions) descend into the dark depths of the original Anglo-Saxon tunnels, meeting real cave-dwellers from its dramatic hidden past.

4.  Go deer spotting at Wollaton Hall

The stunning parkland is home to herds of free roaming deer. The 16th century building houses the city's Natural History Museum. And the Courtyard Stables are home to an Industrial Museum, Steam Engine House, Visitor Centre and the Yard Gallery, which hosts natural history and science exhibitions. A joint ticket for everything is £1.00 (concessions).

Green and Pleasant

5.  Unmissable outdoor events

There are free events almost every weekend during the summer at the Arboretum, including live music festivals, Nottingham Pride, brass bands, etc. Other annual events such as Nottingham Mela, Riverside Festival, Goose Fair, Robin Hood Pageant, and Nottingham Carnival take place in and around the city throughout the year.

6.  Pack a picnic and visit Greens Windmill

Visit the Gusto Food Hall in Sneinton for a few deli luxuries and head up to the windmill. It’s high on a ridge with views of Nottingham and the valley of the River Trent. Find out about the life and work of George Green, the famous 19th century mathematician. Test your minds with fun hands-on puzzles and experiments. Free admission, open Wednesday - Sunday.

Hop on a Tram

7.  Fancy being at one with nature?

Then head to Bestwood Country Park, a 650 acre park on the northern fringe of Nottingham. It has a huge variety of wildlife habitats, from Mill Lakes teeming with waterbirds, to meadows full of wildflowers, from ancient oak woodland, to a reclaimed pit tip. A relaxing retreat for a walk, a picnic with friends, or just an escape from the city. (£2.20 all day tram ticket).

8.  To plan a day of indulgence

Download the Beer by Tram Guide by NET (Nottingham Express Transit) and Nottingham CAMRA. Some of Notts’ best real ale pubs are accessible by the city's tram system. The guide provides selected pub details, opening times, beers and food available, walking distances from the tram etc. £2.20 all day ticket. Plus drinks money!

Take to the Water
